With many people stuck at home for months and finding extra time inside to clean out closets and garages, Handy Bay Island stores are seeing an influx of donations.

Some thrift stores are overflowing with clothes, books, wardrobes and all the other things people keep at home, and some are about to overflow.

Habitat for Humanity Island District stores were open at a time when other thrift stores were closed because they were selling building materials, prompting a rush of donations, according to director of retail operations Tony Person.

According to him, the organization received items such as clothing and books, which it normally does not receive, because many second-hand stores have closed.

Typically, the organization accepts larger items such as used appliances, cabinets, furniture, lights, art and other household items.

The increase in donations continues. Several thrift stores said more people are donating, and people are donating more items.

"It's almost quadrupled, and we've never turned down donations, but we've had to on occasion," Persson said. "They've all spent the last six months cleaning out their garages."

Habitat for Humanity stores in Oak Harbor and Freeland are still accepting donations, but Person said it would be wise for people to call the stores before donating.

Foot traffic is also up 20 to 25 percent since May, Persson said, and some items are flying off the shelves now compared to pre-virus.

Persson said used devices are in high demand, suggesting the impact of the pandemic on personal finances and low supply has caused people to migrate to used devices.

Other thrift stores didn't see an increase in donations like Habitat for Humanity, but sales remained steady.

They were open for donations six days a week before the pandemic, director Carol Squire said. She suggested that people arrive earlier in the day because the center could reach capacity before its scheduled closing time.

Stores also didn't see the usual "dip" in sales from summer to fall, Squire said.

"Now we're open four days a week together, and we're making half the revenue we did last year," he said. "So it's worth the trade."
